The 29-year-old trainer says fitness helped her through a terrible time.

About six years ago, Massy Arias had just gotten out of an abusive relationship, and her brother was battling Hodgkin's lymphoma. The emotional toll of both was enormous. She felt lost. Depressed. And so she retreated to her apartment, barely ate, and dropped an unhealthy amount of weight. Her gums receded and her hair fell out as the depression deepened over the course of nearly eight months. Massy tried therapy, hypnosis, herbal treatments. Nothing worked. Until she hit the gym.

Though never a regular exerciser, she just hopped onto an elliptical, then banged out one pushup after another. "I didn't know anything; I was just looking for that thing that was going to give me the mental release I needed." She shared her routines and her journey on social media as a way of inspiring others, never planning on making a job out of it. But when people started asking technical Qs, she decided to get certified. Three years in, she and her husband (who owns a production company) made an official business plan, now known as her MA30Day lifestyle program.

The 29-year-old's workout plans are tough—a mix of resistance training, calisthenics, yoga, and HIIT—and they're fueled by a deeper purpose, says Massy, a newly appointed CoverGirl, the brand's first fitfluencer. "We quit a bit too quickly, and we don't find out what we're made of. My goal is to have people believe in themselves a little. Because that's how I got better, and that's the reason why I'm here: not giving up, believing in myself, a lot of trial and error, and a lot of failure."

When Massy was seeing a therapist to treat her depression, she did a total 180. "I got rid of bad habits and people that were contributing to my feeling that way. Once I started surrounding myself with the right people—people that were looking for new adventures—I found myself going out more, getting the sun, being occupied, being excited about new things. Even today, I still apply the same principles to my social circles."

"I had to ignore a lot of people who commented during my pregnancy [she gave birth to her daughter, Indi, in February of 2017]. At first I was body-shamed because I wasn't showing fast enough. When I started showing and I was doing all my workouts, then it was, 'You're working out too hard. That's not healthy for the baby.' No matter what you do, people will always have something to say. It's based on ignorance."
